Christian university blocks gay student publication

On March 3rd, 2011, Harding University, a Christian university in Arkansas, was filled with the pamphlets and online publications about gay, lesbian and bisexual students. This publication, called The State of the Gay, was posted online at huqueerpress.com saying that “We are queer. We are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. While the rest of you fall in love with the opposite sex, we share our lives and our beds with those of the same gender.” Because their student handbook states the unacceptability of sexual relationships to God on the campus, the university thought that the website went against their policies and soon blocked access to the website on their servers.
In my opinion, despite the fact that this Harding University is a Christian school and disapproves of any sexual relationships outside of marriage, their school policies go against the principle of autonomy and respect as well as the principle of equality and justice. Everyone has the freedom of making their own decisions and having equal rights. Sexism, which is one of the irresponsible examples of the principle of autonomy, should not be accepted. People also have the same rights as any other person, meaning that sexually different people such as gay and bisexuals should all still have the equal human rights. However, because it is a Christian school and their policies are based on the Bible, it would be difficult to follow those principles.

  1. Balancing personal beliefs with allowing autonomy of others seems a difficult balance.
